Getting Around

Commute times are one of the most common concerns when PCSing. You have to get on an interstate to get to almost every base. Interstate 64 runs all the way to central Virginia in Richmond. Interstate 264 runs all the way from the ocean front through Norfolk and Portsmouth, ending in north western part of Chesapeake. Interstate 564, mainly provides access to Norfolk Naval Station, while interstate 464 provides access from Norfolk through Portsmouth to Chesapeake.

Tunnels/Bridges

You will often have to deal with a tunnel when commuting. The most often “backed up'“ tunnel is the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT). The Monitor Merrimac Tunnel is often used as a back up for the HRBT. Here are the main tunnels in the Hampton Roads areas:

  • Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel

  • Midtown Tunnel

  • Downtown Tunnel

  • Monitor Merrimac Tunnel

  • James River Bridge
